Turning My Business Into a Side Hustle: A Journey Backwards to Move Forwards

In the entrepreneurial world, the usual story is that of a side hustle growing into a full-time business. But what if you turn that narrative on its head? What if you transition your full-time business into a side hustle? As a Mum in business, I did just that, and it has been one of the most liberating decisions I've made.

The Decision to Change Track

The typical entrepreneurial journey often follows a linear path: a side hustle blossoms into a thriving business that demands your full attention. My journey, however, has been the opposite. Here’s why:

Craving Interaction: Working from home, especially as a Mum, can be incredibly isolating. I missed the camaraderie of colleagues, spontaneous brainstorming sessions, team coffee walks, and random chats that had nothing to do with kids. The isolation was taking a toll on my creativity and enthusiasm.

Financial Stability: With the current economic uncertainty, having a stable income became increasingly appealing. A part-time job offered not only financial stability but also a structured routine that I found myself craving.

Energy and Passion: The constant hustle was draining. I realised I no longer had the energy to be perpetually on social media, pushing my services. Somewhere along the line, I had lost my passion. Transitioning my business into a side hustle allowed me to reconnect with what truly excites me and look to pursue new opportunities.

The Benefits of the Switch

Turning my business into a side hustle has been incredibly freeing. Here’s how it has positively impacted my life and work:

Reinvigorated Energy: With a couple of days a week dedicated to a “job”, I now have the freedom to focus on a passion project that has been simmering in my mind during my maternity leave. This newfound balance has reinvigorated my energy and enthusiasm for my side hustle.

Creative Freedom: My side hustle is no longer about chasing clients and sales; it’s about passion. I find myself eagerly waiting for the moments I can work on it, and I’m constantly buzzing with excitement and ideas. That’s the magic – when you’re onto something good, it lights you up and makes you feel energised.

Organic Growth: While I still love supporting businesses with their Visibility and PR (and will continue to do so), I’ve decided to let these opportunities come to me organically. This shift in approach has taken away the pressure and allowed me to enjoy the work even more.

Embracing Change

It’s okay to change track. It’s okay to acknowledge that what worked for you once may not be what you need now. For any Mum in business feeling isolated, burnt out, or simply craving something different, know that it’s perfectly fine to adjust your sails.

Turning my business into a side hustle wasn’t a step back; it was a step towards a more balanced, fulfilling life. It has allowed me to pursue my passions with renewed vigor and excitement while still providing for my family and enjoying the camaraderie and stability of a part-time job.

So, if you’re considering a similar shift, or rather any change in your business, embrace it. Listen to your needs, honor your passions, and don’t be afraid to rewrite the entrepreneurial narrative. After all, business isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey – it’s uniquely yours.
